Alex Friesen was born on January 30, 1991, in St. Catharines, Ontario. A standout for the Niagara Ice Dogs of the Ontario Hockey League, Friesen was selected on the sixth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks.

Friesen split time during his first professional season between the Chicago Wolves of the AHL and the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL, recording five and four points respectively. The Canucks AHL affiliate would change to the Utica Comets in 2013 and Friesen would spend the better part of three seasons with the club.

On February 15, 2016, Friesen made his NHL debut in a 5-2 Canucks loss to the Minnesota Wild.

In the summer of 2016, as an unrestricted free agent, Friesen signed a deal with the St.Louis Blues.
