Matt Campanale was born on February 14, 1988, in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. A defensive defenceman, he played his collegiate hockey at the University of New Hampshire.

Though undrafted, Campanale signed a professional contract with the New York Islanders following the 201011 NCAA season and made his NHL debut on April 6, 2011 in a 3-2 loss against the Boston Bruins.
