Victor Bartley was born February 17, 1988 in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. Bartley played major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League with the Kamploops Blazers and the Regina Pats.

Undrafted by an NHL club, Bartley would make his professional debut in the American Hockey League in 2009 before signing with the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL for the 2009-10 season.

After a year with the Grizzlies, Bartley would sign a one-year deal with Rögle BK of the Swedish second tier league. Bartley would lead all Rögle defenders in scoring with 34 points in 52 games. His strong play got the attention of the Nashville Predators and he signed on to join the club on May 24, 2011.

Bartley would join the Predators AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals, for the 201112 season. With the Admirals, Bartley would record an impressive 39 points in 76 games, ranking him in the top ten AHL scoring defencemen.

During the lockout shortened 201213 season, Bartley received his first NHL recall and made his NHL debut for the Predators in a 6-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on March 11, 2013. He would go on to appear in 24 games for the Predators, recording the first seven assists of his NHL career.

On January 15, 2016, Bartley was part of a three-way trade that saw him he land with the Montreal Canadiens.
