Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Ryan Murphy
Ryan Murphy was born on March 31, 1993, in Aurora, Ontario. He played junior hockey for the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL for the majority of four seasons from 2009-2013. In 2009-2010, as a 16 year old rookie, Murphy played 62 games for Kitchener and was a solid on-ice performer. He was second amongst defencemen on his team in scoring with six goals and 33 assists. In his sophomore season with the club, Murphy finished second amongst defencemen in the league in scoring racking up an impressive 79 points in 63 games. Ryan was also named to team Canada at the 2011 U18 World Junior Championship where he led the team in scoring with 4 goals and 9 assists in 7 games.

In 2011, the offensive defenceman was drafted 12th overall in the NHL by the Carolina Hurricanes. In September, Murphy signed a 3 year entry-level contract with the Hurricanes. He then returned to Kitchener for his third OHL season where he was plagued by concussion issues, but would eventually re-established himself as one of the league's top defencemen, particularly in the playoffs.

Murphy's consistent play earned him a spot on team Canada at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, where he helped Canada to a fourth place finish. In February of 2013, he made his NHL debut and would go on to appear in four games for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Murphy would split time during the early part of his professional career between the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL and the Hurricanes. In 32 games for the Checkers in 2015-16, he scored seven times and added 17 assists. In 35 games at the NHL level, Murphy recorded 10 assists.

Following the 2016-17 season, Murphy was traded to the Calgary Flames who then bought out the remaining year on his contract. Murphy was then an unrestricted free agent and signed a deal with the Minnesota Wild on July 1, 2017.
