Nathan Beaulieu was born on December 5, 1992 in Strathroy, Ontario. A product of the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, he was selected in the first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. As a member of the Sea Dogs, Beaulieu helped the capture the 2011 Memorial Cup title and was named to the tournament's all-star team.

Beaulieu would make his professional debut in the American Hockey League for the Canadiens affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs, during the 2012-13 season. He would appear in 67 games for the club, scoring seven times and adding 24 assists.

In the late stages of the 2012-13 season, Beaulieu would get his first taste of life in the NHL. He would make his NHL debut on March 30, 2013. Beaulieu would go on to appear in six regular season games for the Canadiens as the season came to an end.

On the international stage Beaulieu helped Canada to the bronze medal at the 2012 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship.
