Scott Mayfield was born on October 14, 1992 in St. Louis, Missouri. The product of the University of Denver Pioneers was drafted in the second round, 34th overall, by the New York Islanders in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

After his two seasons with the Pioneers, the New York Islanders would assign Mayfield to their AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. At the end of the 2013-14 season on April 6, 2014, Mayfield would make his NHL debut in a 4-0 loss against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

During the 2014-15 season, Mayfield would play his entire season with Bridgeport. However, Mayfield would make appearances in two playoff games for the New York Islanders.

Mayfield would again split time between Bridgeport and New York during the 2016-17 season. In 25 games for the Islanders the defenceman scored twice and added seven assists.
