Christopher Gibson was born on December 27, 1992, in Karkkila, Finland. At the age 15, he moved to Canada where he would attend the prestigious Notre Dame College in Wilcox, Saskatchewan. In his lone year at Notre Dame, Gibson backstopped the club to the Telus Cup, Canada's national midget hockey championship.
The following season Gibson joined the Chicoutimi Sagueneens of the QMJHL. After two promising seasons with Chicoutimi, Gibson was selected in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. He would go unsigned by the Kings however and instead join the Toronto Maple Leafs as an unrestricted free agent.
On September 17, 2015, Gibson was traded by the Maple Leafs, along with four other prospects, to the New York Islanders in exchange for Michael Grabner.
On January 2, 2016, Gibson got his first taste of NHL action coming on in relief for Islanders goaltender Thomas Greiss and stopping 16 of 17 shots. Gibson made his first NHL start on April 6, 2016 as the Islanders defeated the Capitals by a score of 4-3 in overtime. Gibson spent the majority of the 2017-18 season with the Islanders AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. In 37 games he posted 19 wins, a 2.42 goals-against-average and a .906 save percentage. He also saw action in eight games at the NHL level, recording a pair of wins for the Islanders.
