Ryan Sproul was born on January 13, 1993 in Mississauga, Ontario. The product of the OHLís Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds was drafted in the second round, 55th overall, by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Sproul spent three seasons with the Greyhounds which is highlighted by being named to the OHLís First All-Star Team and being awarded the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the most outstanding defenseman in 2013. Once his time in the OHL was over, Sproul would be assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL to end the 2012-13 season.
For the 2013-14 season, Sproul would play the majority of it with Grand Rapids where he scored 11 goals and 32 points in 72 games of his rookie season. This would place him on the AHL All-Rookie Team for 2014. On April 13, 2014, Sproul would be promoted to the NHL where he made his NHL debut for the Red Wings in a 3-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues.
