Dillon Simpson was born on February 10, 1993 in Edmonton, Alberta. He played his collegiate hockey at the University of North Dakota and was selected in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers.

Following four collegiate seasons, Simpson made his professional debut in the American Hockey League with the Oklahoma City Barons in 2014-15. In 71 games the defenceman scored three times and added 14 assists. Simpson would get his first taste of life in the NHL during the 2016-17 season, suiting up in three games for the Oilers during the middle portion of the season.

In the summer of 2018, as an unrestricted free agent, Simpson signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
