Michael Mersch was born on born October 2, 1992, in Park Ridge, Illinois. A product of the U.S. National Development Team, Mersch attended the University of Wisconsin and was selected in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings.

Upon completion of his collegiate career, Mersch joined the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs, during the late stages of the 2013-14 season. He would appear in seven games for the club as well as four post-season contests.

Mersch would spend his first full professional season with the Monarchs. In 76 games he posted 22 goals and added 23 assists. The following season with the Kings' new AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, Mersch scored 24 times in 52 games and his strong play was rewarded with his first NHL call-up. He made his NHL debut for the Kings on December 11, 2015 in a shootout win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. He would go on to appear in 17 games for the Kings, scoring a goal and adding two assists. Mersch spent two more seasons with the Reign before signing as a free agent with the Dallas Stars on July 1, 2018.
