Dylan DeMelo was born on May 1, 1993 in London, Ontario. A product of the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors, of the Ontario Hockey League, he was selected in the sixth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks.

Following completion of his 201213 junior season, DeMelo joined the Sharks AHL affiliate for 10 games, recording four assists.

DeMelo would spend two full seasons in the American Hockey League before getting his first taste of NHL action. On October 17, 2015, he made his NHL debut in a 6-3 Sharks loss to the New York Islanders. He would go on to appear in 45 games for the Sharks, recording two goal and adding two assists. DeMelo would suit up in 63 games for the Sharks during the 2017-18 season, producing 20 assists. At season's end he signed a two-year contract extension to remain with San Jose.

On September 13, DeMelo's time in the Sharks organization would come to an end. He was traded to the Ottawa Senators as part of the package that saw San Jose acquire Erik Karlsson.
