Garret Sparks was born June 28, 1993 in Elmhurst, Illinois. He tended goal for the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League and was selected in the seventh round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Sparks would spend his first two professional seasons splitting time between the Toronto Marlies of the AHL and the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL. However injuries in goal for the Maple Leafs sped up is progression during the 2015-16 season. On November 30, 2015, Sparks made his NHL debut, stopping all 24 shots in a 30 shutout win at home against the Edmonton Oilers. It was the first time in franchise history that a Maple Leafs goaltender recorded a shutout in his first game.

Sparks would go on to appear in 17 games for the Maple Leafs during the 2015-16 season before being returned to the AHL.

On the international stage Sparks was part of the United States team that captured gold at the 2013 World Junior Championship.
