Tyler Johnson was born on July 29, 1990, in Spokane, Washington. He played his junior hockey for his hometown Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League where increased his goal and point totals in each of his four seasons. In his final year with the club he notched an impressive 53 goals and 115 points and was rewarded for his all-around game by being named the WHL's Top Defensive Forward.

Undrafted by an NHL club, Johnson signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning in March of 2011. Johnson started the 2011-12 season with the Norfolk Admirals, the AHL affiliate of the Lightning. In March, he went on a 13-game scoring streak, the longest streak by an AHL rookie in more than 6 years.

With the NHL locked out to begin the 2012-13 season, Johnson began the year at the AHL level. After 62 games with Syracuse Crunch in which he scored 37 goals, Johnson got his first taste of NHL action in the late stages of the 2012-13 season. In 14 games for the Lightning he would record three goals and three assists.

In his rookie NHL season with the Lightning in 201314, Johnson established himself on Tampa Bay's top offensive line and finished the season with 24 goals and 26 assists for 50 points in 82 games. For his efforts, he was nominated for thr Calder Memorial Trophy nominee for the league's top rookie. and named to the NHL All-Rookie Team.

Johnson followed up his breakout season by scoring 29 goals and adding 43 assists for 72 points, finishing 15th overall league scoring. He also finished third in the NHL in plus-minus rating of +33 for the season.

On April 27, 2015, during the 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs, Johnson became the first player in Lightning history to record three multi-goal games in a single playoff series.

On the international stage Johnson helped Team USA to the gold medal at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Canada, recording three goals and five points.
