Jordie Benn was born on July 26, 1987 in Victoria, British Columbia. Undrafted into the NHL, Benn joined the Allen Americans of the Central Hockey League following his junior career in the BCHL.

In the summer of 2010 Benn signed as a free agent with the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League. The following summer he would in a deal with their parent club, the Dallas Stars of the NHL.

On January 3, 2012, Benn made his NHL debut against the Detroit Red Wings. He would record his first NHL point during the game, an assist on a goal scored by Loui Eriksson. His brother Jamie would record the other assist on the goal. On March 23, 2013, Benn would pot his first career NHL goal against Semyon Varlamov of the Colorado Avalanche.

Benn would establish himself as one of the Stars most responsible defenceman during the 2013-14 season. In 78 games for the club, he recorded 20 points and his +16 rating was tops amongst Stars blueliners.

With free agency looming in the summer of 2016, Benn opted to re-sign with the Stars on June 24, 2016, inking a three-year deal with the club. However, just 58 games into the first year of his new contract, Benn was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Greg Pateryn and a fourth-round draft pick.
