Spencer Abbott was born on April 30, 1988 in Hamilton Ontario. The undrafted left winger played his junior in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League before deciding to continue his hockey career with the University of Maine Black Bears of the NCAA.
In his senior year with the University of Maine, Abbott was rewarded by being a unanimous selection to the Hockey East First-Team All Stars and was named the Athletic Republic Player of the Year. Upon graduation, his strong play was rewarded by the Toronto Maple Leafs giving him an NHL entry level contract in 2012.
Abbott would be assigned to the Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. He would spend parts of three seasons with the Marlies before the Maple Leafs would give him a shot at the NHL level. On October 5, 2013, Abbott made his NHL debut in a 5-4 shootout win over the Ottawa Senators.
On February 26, 2015, Abbott was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for T.J. Brennan. Upon entering the Blackhawks system, Abbott was assigned to their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs. After not being re-signed by the Blackhawks, Abbott decided to sign a one year deal with Frölunda HC of the Swedish Elite League on June 16, 2015. After a season overseas, Abbott would rejoin the Blackhawks organization in the summer of 2016, signing as an unrestricted free agent.
