Matthew Konan was born on September 3, 1991 in Tustin, California. A product of the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League, where the defender played five seasons, Konan was undrafted by an NHL club, but signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Flyers at the conclusion of his junior career.

Konan made his professional debut in the ECHL before being promoted to the American Hockey League after five games. At the AHL level he recorded two goals and four assists in 45 games and would serve as a stable defender. For his strong play he was rewarded with his first trip to the NHL. In the late stages of the 2012-13 season he would suit up for a pair of games for the Philadelphia Flyers.
