Shawn Hunwick was born April 9, 1987 in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Hunwick played for the Michigan Wolverines in the CCHA, where he joined the team as a walk-on in 200708 though the goaltender saw little playing time. When he finally got his chance between the pipes, Hunwick led his team to a CCHA tournament title, where he won tournament Most Valuable Player in 2010.

The following season Hunwick was named one of the finalists for the Hobey Baker Award as the best collegiate player in America.

Undrafted by an NHL club, Hunwick signed an ATO (amateur tryout) contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 28, 2012 and appeared in a single game for the club.
