Griffin Reinhart was born on January 24, 1994 in West Vancouver, British Columbia. Reinhart comes from a family of hockey players. His father, Paul, played over 600 games for the Canucks and Flames, and his brothers were drafted by the Flames and Sabres in 2010 and 2014 respectively.

A standout defender for the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League, Griffin Reinhart was selected fourth overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders. He would return to Edmonton where he would help lead the Oil Kings to the Memorial Cup title in 2014 with his solid two-way play from the back end.

Reinhart would make the Islanders out of training camp and start the 2014-15 season with the club. In total he would appear in eight games, recording a single assist. Reinhart would spend the majority of his first professional season with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League. In 59 games for the club the big defenceman would record seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points.

On June 26, 2015, Reinhart was traded by the Islanders to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a first and a second round draft pick.

On the international stage, Reinhart twice represented Canada at the World Junior Championship (2013 and 2014) finishing in fourth place on both occasions.
