Michael Matheson was born February 27, 1994 in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. He played junior hockey for the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL where he defenceman in scoring in 201112. The Florida Panthers selected Matheson in the first round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and he would attend Boston College.

At the conclusion of the 201415 collegiate season, Matheson signed with the Panthers and chose to forgo his senior year of NCAA eligibility. He would join the Panthers' AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage for the remainder of their season.

Matheson would spend the majority of the 2015-16 season in the AHL with the Panthers' new affiliate, the Portland Pirates. In 54 games for the club he notched eight goals and added 12 assists. He also got his first glimpse of life in the NHL, appearing in three games for the Panthers.

On the international stage, Matheson has represented Canada on numerous occasions including helping his homeland to gold at the 2016 World Championship.
