Jordan Schmaltz was born on October 8, 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin. A standout defenceman for the Sioux City Musketeers and Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL, he was selected in the first round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues and would go on to attend the University of North Dakota.

The 2015-16 season would be Schmaltz’ first as a professional. He spent the year with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League. In 71 games for the club he scored six times and added 30 assists. Schmaltz would spend the majority of the 2016-17 season with the Wolves as well, but he would also get his first taste of NHL action. He suited up in nine games for the Blues, recording a pair of assists.
