Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Matt Murray
Matt Murray was born on May 25, 1994, in Thunder Bay, Ontario. A product of the Ontario Hockey League where he tended goal for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Martin was selected in the third round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Murray would make his professional debut in the American Hockey League during the 2014-15 season with the Wilkes-Barre Penguins. In his first full season with the club Murray set a record for the longest shutout streak when he went 304 minutes and 11 seconds without allowing a goal.

Murray made his NHL debut on December 19, 2015 in a 21 loss against the Carolina Hurricanes. He would be returned to Wilkes-Barre, but was recalled again by the Pittsburgh Penguins on February 21, 2016 and started a total of nine games during the 2015-16 season.

After replacing Jeff Zatkoff in game three of the first round of the NHL playoffs, Murray would stay in the Penguins net during the club's run to the Stanley Cup championship. At just 21 years of age, Murray became the sixth rookie goaltender to appear in the Stanley Cup Final since 1976. In 21 post-season games, Murray put up impressive numbers, such as a 2.08 goals-against-average and .923 save percentage, earning strong consideration for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.

Murray appeared in 49 games for the Penguins during first full season in the NHL. He recorded an impressive 2.41 goals against average and solid .923 save percentage. Murray suffered an injury during warm up of the Penguins first post-season game and would not see post-season action until Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final. Murray would go on to start all of the Penguins subsequent playoff games, backstopping the club to their second consecutive Stanley Cup title.
