Matt Grzelcyk was born on January 5, 1994 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. A product of the United States National Development Team, he was selected in the third round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins and would go on to attend Boston University where he would serve as team captain in his junior and senior years.

Following his fourth collegiate campaign, Grzelcyk joined the Bruins in AHL affiliate in Providence. His first full professional season would come in 2016-17 season and would be spend primarily in Providence. In 70 games for the club the defenceman scored six times to go along with 26 assists. Grzelcyk would also get his first glimpse of life in the NHL during his first season. He made his debut with the Bruins on December 14, 2016 in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Grzelcyk would suit up in 61 games for the Bruins during the 2017-18 season, recording the first three goals of his career as well as 12 assists. The defender would also see action in 11 post-season games as Boston reached the second round of the playoffs.
