Brett Kulak was born on January 6, 1994 in Stony Plain, Alberta. He played junior hockey for the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League and was selected in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames.

Following the conclusion of his WHL seasons in both 201213 and 201314, Kulak joined the Flames' American Hockey League affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat, to finish their seasons.

Kulak began the 201415 season with the ECHL's Colorado Eagles before earning a promotion to the AHL's Adirondack Flames after just 39 games. He would go on to appear in 26 games for Adirondack, scoring four times and adding nine assist.

On April 11, 2015, Kulak would make his NHL debut in the Flames' final game of the season, a 5-1 loss against the Winnipeg Jets.
