Taylor Leier was born on February 15, 1994 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A product of the Portland Winterhawks of the Ontario Hockey League, Leier was selected in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers.

Leier spent his first season as pro with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League. In 73 games for the club he scored 13 times and adding 18 assists. The following season Leier notched 20 goals for Lehigh Valley and his strong play did not go unrewarded. He made his NHL debut on November 14, 2015 and would go on to appear in six games for the Flyers over the course of the season.
