Jaccob Slavin was born on May 1, 1994, in Erie, Colorado. A product of the Chicago Steel of the USHL, Slavin was selected in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes and attended Colorado College for two years.

Slavin made his professional debut for the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League during the 2015 season. In 14 games for the club the defenceman recorded seven assists. He was subsequently recalled by the Hurricanes and made his NHL debut on November 20, 2015. He would go on to appear in 63 games for the Hurricanes in his rookie season, scoring a pair of goals and adding 18 assists.
