Ben Hutton was born on born April 20, 1993, in Prescott, Ontario. A product of the Central Canada Hockey League, Hutton was selected in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks and would go on to attend the University of Maine.

After three seasons at the University of Maine, Hutton made his professional debut for the Canucks' AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets, in the late stages of the 2014-15 season. In four games for the club the defenceman recorded his first professional goal.

Hutton cracked the Canucks' lineup to start the 2015-16 season. He would go on to appear in 75 games for the club, scoring a goal and adding 24 assists.

On the international stage Hutton helped Canada to the gold medal at the 2016 World Hockey Championships.
