Colin Miller was born on October 29, 1992, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He played his major junior hockey for his hometown Greyhounds of the OHL. Miller served as captain of the Greyhounds in his final season and was awarded the Mickey Renaud Captain's Trophy as the OHL team captain that best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice.

Miller was selected in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings and made his professional debut for their AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs, during the 2013-14 season. In 65 games for the club, he scored five times and added 12 assists.

After two seasons with the Monarchs, Miller was traded along with Martin Jones to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Milan Lucic. He would go on to see action in 42 games for the Bruins during the 2015-16, scoring three times and recording 13 assists.
