Jake Dotchin was born on March 24, 1994 in Cambridge, Ontario. He played three season in the Ontario Hockey League with the Owen Sound Attack and the Barrie Colts and was selected in the sixth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Dotchin made his professional debut in the American Hockey League for the Lightning’s affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, during the 2014-15 season. In 55 games for the club the big defender recorded six goals and 14 assists for 20 points. On January 21, 2017, Dotchin got his first taste of NHL action as the Lightning fell to the Arizona Coyotes by a score of 5-3. He would go on to appear in 35 games for Tampa Bay during the 2016-17 season, tallying 11 assists.
