Matt Benning was born on May 25, 1994 in St. Albert, Alberta. A product of the Spruce Grove Saints of the AJHL and the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL, he was selected in the sixth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins.

Benning attended Northeastern University where he spent three seasons as a member of the Huskies. Upon completion of his third collegiate season he signed as a free agent with the Edmonton Oilers and would make his professional debut early in the 2016-17 season for the club’s AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. After just two games with Bakersfield Benning was recalled by the Oilers and made his NHL debut on November 1, 2016. He would go on to appear in 62 games for the Oilers during his first professional campaign, scoring three times and adding 12 assists.
