Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Nate Schmidt
Nate Schmidt was born on July 16, 1991 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The undrafted defenseman played his junior with the Fargo Force of the USHL before joining the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers to continue his hockey career.

In his three years with the Gophers he would score 12 goals and 74 points in 96 games. This would qualify him to be on the All-WCHA Second Team in 2012, All-WCHA First Team in 2013, and an AHCA West Second-Team All-American in 2013.

His play at the NCAA garnered enough interest from the NHL that he would be signed by the Washington Capitals’ organization as a free agent. Schmidt would start his professional career with the Hershey Bears but it wasn’t until the beginning of the 2013-14 season that he would get his shot at the NHL.

Schmidt was promoted to the Washington Capitals on October 12, 2013 in a 5-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche. In his first two full years of professional hockey, Schmidt would play 29 games in the NHL in 2013-14 and 39 games in 2014-15.
