Jonathan Drouin was born on March 28, 1995 in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec. A highly-touted junior hockey star with the Halifax Mooseheads, Drouin would tally 41 goals and 64 assists for 105 points during the 2012-13 season and help lead the Mooseheads to the Memorial Cup championship. The following summer he was selected third overall in the NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Drouin would return to Halifax for another year in junior and continue to put up points at a prodigious pace. In 46 games he scored 29 times and added an astonishing 79 assists for 108 points,

Because of an injury suffered during the Lightning's 2014-15 training camp, Drouin would begin his professional career at the AHL level with the Syracuse Crunch. He would appear in two games for the Crunch, scoring a goal and adding a pair of assists. Drouin was recalled by the Lightning and made his NHL debut for the club on October 20, 2014 against the Edmonton Oilers. He would go on to appear in 70 games for the Lightning during his rookie campaign, scoring four goals and adding 28 assists for 32 points.

Drouin would establish new career highs in goals, assists and points during the 2016-17 season, with 21, 32 and 53 respectively. At season's end, with restricted free agency pending, he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Mikhail Sergachev and a second round draft pick.

On the international stage, Drouin won a gold medal at the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament as a member of Canada's under-18 team and was a member of Team Canada at the 2013 World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia, that finished in fourth place.
