Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Darnell Nurse
Darnell Nurse was born on February 4, 1995 in Hamilton, Ontario. The towering defender starred for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League for three seasons and was selected seventh overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Nurse comes from an athletic family. His father, Richard, was a wide receiver in the Canadian Football League, his sister, Kia, is a star for Canada's National Basketball team and his uncle, Donovan McNabb, is a former star quarterback in the NFL.

Nurse would return to Sault Ste. Marie for the 2013-14 season and continue to prove himself as a dominating defenceman. In 64 games for the Greyhounds he would record 13 goals and 37 assists for 50 points. In addition, Nurse was selected to Team Canada for the 2015 World Junior Championship being held in Toronto, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec. He would emerge as one of the leaders on the club and help Canada to the gold medal, being named one of Canada's top three players.

Following the 2013-14 OHL season, Nurse would join the Edmonton Oilers AHL affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons, for the remainder of their season. He would see action in four regular season games and three playoff games.

Injuries would derail much of Nurse's 2014-15 season. He would make his NHL debut, but appear in just a pair of games, failing to register a point. He would spend the majority of his time with Sault Ste. Marie where he recorded 33 points in 36 games. He would once again join Oklahoma City for the AHL playoffs at year's end. In four games he would record four assists.

Nurse would crack the Edmonton Oilers lineup to begin the 2015-16 and immediately begin to establish himself as a reliable NHL defender.
