Rasmus Ristolainen was born on October 27, 1994 in Turku, Finland. A standout for Turun Palloseura in his homeland, he was selected in the first round, eighth overall, by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

The 2013-14 season would be Ristolainen's first in North America. He made his NHL debut for the Sabres on opening night against the Detroit Red Wings on October 2, 2013. Ristolainen would split the season between the Sabres and their AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, playing in 34 games for each club.

Ristolainen would continue to progress during his second season in North America. He suited up in 78 games for the Sabres during the 2014-15 season, recording eight goals and 12 assists. The following season, 2015-16, Ristolainen appeared in all 82 games for the club, scoring nine times and adding 32 assists.

On the international stage, Ristolainen scored the game-winning goal in overtime of the 2014 World Junior Championship, earning Finland the victory over the rival Sweden.
