Ian McCoshen was born on August 5, 1995 in Anaheim, California. A standout defenceman for the Waterloo Black Hawks of the USHL, he was selected in the second round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers and would go on to attend Boston College.

McCoshen began his professional career with the Panthers AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds, in 2016-17. Appearing in 68 games for the club, he scored four times and added 12 assists. McCoshen would also get his first taste of NHL action during his first pro campaign, suiting up in three games for the Panthers while recording an assist.
