Adam Erne was born on April 20, 1995 in New Haven, Connecticut. A start in the USHL, Erne would go on to join the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL. In his final season with the Remparts, Erne led the club to the Presidentís Cup and was awarded the Guy Lafleur Trophy as the playoffs most valuable player.

Erne was drafted in the second round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning and would make his professional debut for the clubís AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. In his first full season for the Crunch he recorded 14 goals and 15 assists in 59 games. Erne would split time between the Crunch and the Lightning during the 2016-17 season. In 26 games for Tampa bay the winger scored three times.
