Ben Harpur was born on January 12, 1995 in Hamilton, Ontario. A product of the Guelph Storm, the big defenceman was selected in the fourth round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators.

Harpur made his professional debut with the Senators' American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, during the 2015-16 season. He would go on to appear in 47 games for the club, scoring a pair of goals and adding four assists.

On March 31, 2016, Harpur made his first NHL appearance, taking the ice as the Senators took on the Minnesota Wild. In total Harpur would suit up in five NHL games during the 2015-16 season, recording the first assist of his career.
