MacKenzie Weegar was born on January 7, 1994 in Ottawa, Ontario. A product of the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior League, he was selected in the seventh round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers.

Weegar would split time during his first professional season between San Antonio of the American Hockey League and Cincinnati of the East Coast Hockey League. In 52 total games he scored three times and added 20 assists. After spending close to three full season in the minors Weegar got his first taste of NHL action during the 2016-17 season. He made his debut for the Panthers on April 3, 2017 and would go on to appear in two more games for the club as the season came to an end. Weegar would suit up in 60 games for the Panthers during the 2017-18 season, scoring twice and adding six assists.
