Trevor van Riemsdyk was born on July 24, 1991 in Middletown, New Jersey and played high school hockey for Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft. He chose to forgo his senior year at the school however and joined the New Hampshire Monarchs of the EJHL in 2009. He would go on to attend the University of New Hampshire and star for the Wildcats in the NCAA. in his sophomore season van Riemsdyk was named to the All-Hockey East First Team.

Undrafted into the NHL, van Riemsdyk signed with the Chicago Blackhawks as a free agent on March 24, 2014 and would make his professional debut for the club on October 9. Injuries would curtail much of van Riemsdyk's first professional. he was first sidelined with a knee injury and then injured his wrist. When healthy he would split time between the Blackhawks and their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs, during the 2014-15 season, appearing in 18 and eight games respectively.

van Riemsdyk would join the Blackhawks on May 22, 2015 and help the club on their run to the Stanley Cup championship. He made his post season debut in game three of the Stanley Cup Final and would suit up in the next four games as the Blackhawks won their third title in six years.

Appearing in all 82 games for the Blackhwaks during the 2015-16 season, van Riemsdyk, scored three times and added 11 assists, while proving to be a reliable NHL defender.

Left unprotected by the Blackhawks at the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft, van Riemsdyk was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights. The following day he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a second round draft pick.
