Cody Kunyk was born on May 20, 1990 in Sherwood Park, Alberta. The undrafted right winger would play his junior in the Alberta Junior Hockey league before elected to continue his hockey career with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks to play for the Alaska Nanooks. During his time with the Nanooks, Kunyk would be named as an AHCA West Second Team All-American, named to the All-WCHA First Team, and named the WCHA Player of the Year all during the 2013-14 season.
Upon his graduation, Kunyk would sign an entry level contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He would make his NHL debut on April 13, 2014 in a 1-0 shootout victory over the Washington Capitals. The next year, Kunyk would play the entire 2014-15 season with the Lightning’s AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch.
As a free agent, Kunyk signed a one year deal in Germany to play for the Grizzlys Wolfsburg on August 18, 2015. However, Kunyk was released from his contract on September 6, 2015 after being unable to reach the expectations of play.
