Nikolaj Ehlers was born on February 14, 1996, in Aalborg, Denmark. A star junior player in his homeland, Ehlers joined the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior League in 2013 and would immediately prove that he belonged. In 63 games during the 2013-14 season Ehlers scored 49 goals and added 55 assists, earning QMJHL Rookie of the Year honours. He followed that up with 37 goals and 64 assists in just 51 games the following year.

Ehlers was selected in the first round, ninth overall, by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft and would join the club for the 2015-16 campaign. In his first season as a professional Ehlers scored 15 goals and added 23 assists for 38 points, putting him in the top 10 rookie scorers in the NHL.

On the international stage Ehlers has represented his native Denmark on numerous occasions including the 2015 World Junior Championship.
