Julius Honka was born on December 3, 1995 in Jyvaskyla, Finland. A star defenceman in his homeland, Honka spent a single season in the Western Hockey League with the Swift Current Broncos, where he recorded 56 points in 62 games. At mid-season he helped Finland capture the 2014 World Junior Championship.

Honka made his professional debut in the American Hockey League for the Texas Stars during the 2014-15 season. He would spend the better of two and half seasons with Texas before getting his first taste of NHL action. Honka suited up in 16 games for Dallas during the 2016-17 season, scoring a goal and adding four assists.
