Rinat Valiev was born on May 11, 1995, in Nizhnekamsk, Russia. Valiev played junior hockey in the MHL (Russia's top junior league), the USHL and the WHL. He was selected in the selected in the third round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

After his final season in the WHL, Valiev made his professional debut with the Leaf's AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, joining the club for the final two games of the 201415 season.

Valiev would spend the majority of the 2015-16 season with the Marlies, appearing in 60 games, scoring four times and adding 19 assist. He received his first recall to the NHL late in the year and made his debut for the Maple Leafs on March 12, 2016. He would go on the appear in 10 games for the club during his first full season as a professional.

On February 26, 2018, Valiev's time in the Maple Leafs organization would come to an end. He was traded to the Montreal Canadiens along with Kerby Rychel and a second round draft pick in exchange for Tomas Plekanec. Valiev would make his debut for the Canadiens on March 6, 2018.
