Brett Lernout was born on September 24, 1995, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He played his major junior hockey for the Saskatoon Blades and Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League and was selected in the third round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens.

Upon completion of his final junior season, Lernout joined the Canadiens' AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs, for the final six games of their season.

In 2015-16, Lernout spent the majority of his first professional season with Montreal's new AHL affiliate, the St. John's IceCaps. In 69 games for the club the big defenceman scored a pair of goals and added 10 assists.

On April 2, 2016, Lernout made his NHL debut, but suffered a season-ending injury in just his eighth shift.
