Ivan Provorov was born on January 13, 1997 in Yaroslavl, Russia. He spent one season with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the USHL before joining the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL in 2014-15. In his final season in Brandon, Provorov scored 21 goals and added 52 assists, leading the Wheat Kings to the WHL championship. At seasonís end his strong play was rewarded when he was named both the WHL and CHL defenceman of the year.

Provorov was selected seventh overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and would join the club for the 2016-17 season. Appearing in all 82 games, he scored six times and added 24 assists for 30 points, fourth most amongst all first-year defenders.
