Zach Werenski was born on July 19, 1997 in Grosse Point, Michigan. A product of the United States National Development Program, Werenski then attended the University of Michigan. In his first season at Michigan Werenski was named to both the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and the All-Big Ten First Team. The following year Werenski was the second leading scoring defenceman in the nation and named the Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Drafted eighth overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2015, Werenski joined the club’s AHL affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters, for the final seven regular season games of the 2015-16 season. He would also suit up in 17 post-season game for the club, recording 14 points and helping the Monsters to the Calder Cup title.

Werenski made his NHL debut for the Blue Jackets in 2016-17. He would go on to appear in 78 games for the club, scoring 11 times and adding 36 assists for 47 points, all tops amongst first-year defenders. His plus-17 rating was also a rookie blueliner best. At season’s end Werenski’s strong play was rewarded when it was announced he had been nominated for the Calder Trophy for the league’s top rookie.
