Brendan Guhl was born on July 29, 1997 in Edmonton, Alberta. He played his major junior hockey for the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League and was selected in the second round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres.

Guhl made his professional debut at the American Hockey League level for the Sabres’ affiliate, the Rochester Americans during the late stages of the 2015-16 season. In six games he scored a goal and added three assists. Guhl returned to the WHL for the 2016-17 season, but was called up by the Sabres on an emergency basis and would appear in three games before being returned to junior.
