Niklas Treutle was born on April 29, 1991, in Nuremberg, Germany. A standout goaltender in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) with the Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers, Hamburg Freezers and EHC München, he signed as a free agent with the Arizona Coyotes on July 30, 2015.

Treutle would spend the majority of the 2015-16 season for the Coyotes' American Hockey League affiliate, the Springfield Falcons. In 39 games for the club, he posted a 3.04 goals-against-average and a .905 save percentage. He also made his NHL debut during the 2015-16 season, coming on in relief on two occasions.

After just one season in North America, Treutle signed with Krefeld Pinguine of the DEL and joined the club for the 2016-2017 season.
