Charlie Lindgren was born on December 18, 1993, in Lakeville, Minnesota. A goaltender at St. Cloud State University, where he was named NCHC Goaltender of the Year in 2016. Lindgren chose to forgo his final year of NCAA eligibility and signed as a free agent with the Montreal Canadiens on March 30, 2016.

Lindgren made his NHL debut on April 7, 2016, making 28 saves in a 4-2 Canadiens victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. Lindgren would spend the majority of the 2016-17 season with the Canadiens' American Hockey League affiliate, the St. John's IceCaps.

With Canadiens goaltender Carey Price out with injury, Lindren would appear in 14 games for the club during the 2017-18 season. He posted four wins and a 3.03 goals-against-average to go along with a .908 save percentage.
