Casey Nelson was born on Junly 18, 1992, in Stillwater, Minnesota. A product of Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year in 2016, Nelson signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Sabres on March 22, 2016.

Nelson made his NHL debut for the Sabres during the late stages of the 2015-16 season. In seven games for the club he recorded four assists. The following season would be spent primarily at the American Hockey League level with the Sabres affiliate, the Rochester Americans. In 58 games for the club he scored seven times and added 14 assists. He also suited up in 11 games at the NHL level.
