Nikita Zaitsev was born on October 29, 1991 in Moscow, Russia. A standout for HC Sibir in the KHL, he later joined CSKA Moscow where he was a two-time All-Star.

After three strong seasons with CSKA Moscow, Zaitsev signed as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs on May 2, 2016. He would join the club the following season and appear in all 82 games. With four goals and 36 assists he finished as the league’s third highest scoring rookie defenceman.
